Olivia Rodrigo Has Been Listening to The Cure Lately

Olivia Rodigo appeared a guest on the latest episode of Music Makes Us, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s podcast series hosted by Kathleen Hanna. The duo covered a lot of topics over the course of their delightful hour-long conversation, everything from Rodrigo’s love of The White Stripes to Hanna’s early riot grrrl days, along with each musician’s unique experiences dealing with fans and female jealousy.

At one point, Hanna quizzed Rodrigo on some of the music that’s been inspiring her of late. “I did Glastonbury with Robert Smith of The Cure. After that, I’ve been diving deeper into The Cure’s discography, as well as some of their contemporaries like New Order and Joy Division,” the 22-year-old responded. Perhaps a hint at the direction of her third album?

The Bikini Kill singer also wanted to know what album Rodrigo returns to when “you need to reconnect with yourself.” Rodrigo answered, “[Alanis Morissette’s] Jagged Little Pill when I’m feeling, like, I don’t know what to say or like, who am I?” For some reason that album, just like, every part of what makes a human being a human being, it feels like it’s encapsulated in that record.”

“There’s so much anger and spite and jealousy but also so much joy and hope, all like intertwined into each other in such a beautiful way,” she added of the album.

“There’s something so special about rock music made by women,” Rodrigo said later in their conversation. “There’s a different emotional quality to it. The pain and rage and vulnerability that a woman can express through a rock song is an entirely different category. Growing up I was so inspired by that.”
