Black Sabbath, the band that defined heavy metal and changed the landscape of rock music forever, is in the final stages of prepping for their monumental farewell. On July 5, the legendary group will reunite for the Back To The Beginning concert at Villa Park in Birmingham — their hometown and the birthplace of a genre.
For fans across generations, this will be more than just a show; it’s a farewell to one of the most influential bands in music history, and a poignant last chapter for frontman Ozzy Osbourne.
In a new interview with BBC Midlands Today, Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi spoke about the band's upcoming Back To The Beginning show, set to take place on July 5 at Villa Park in Birmingham, United Kingdom. This farewell concert marks a historic reunion of the original Black Sabbath lineup — Iommi, singer Ozzy Osbourne, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward — who will perform together for the first time in two decades. The event will be held in their hometown, adding emotional weight to an already monumental occasion.
For Ozzy Osbourne, who has been living with Parkinson’s disease, the concert will also serve as his final live performance. While he may not be able to complete a full set, he is confirmed to sing four songs. Iommi expressed both excitement and concern, saying: "He might not be able to do the whole show, but he's gonna do four songs. He's singing fine. It's just a shame to see the way it is. But that's life, I suppose. You've just gotta get on with it. But we're all looking forward to it, and all nervous as well, which is very unusual."
The Back To The Beginning show is expected to draw a crowd of over 40,000 fans and will feature an all-star lineup of supporting acts, including Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Lamb of God, and Anthrax. The scale of the event is immense, but for Iommi, the location and reunion elevate the stakes.
"This is totally different from anything else we've done,” he told the BBC. "You know, we've played to 300,000 people, but this is nerve-racking. We're playing in our hometown, we've got all these bands on with us, and we haven't played together for 20 years."
In addition to being a major moment in rock history, the concert will support charitable causes. All profits from the event will be equally distributed among Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Acorn Children’s Hospice, adding a philanthropic layer to the emotional farewell.
Back To The Beginning will stream live at backtothebeginning.com, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Cure Parkinson's, Birmingham Children's Hospital, and Acorn Children's Hospice.
