Little Rock doom metal titans Pallbearer have announced the release of Foundations Of Burden (2025 Redux), a meticulous sonic reconstruction of their acclaimed 2014 album. The newly remixed and remastered version will arrive digitally on November 7, with physical 2xLP and CD editions set for December 5 via Profound Lore Records. Pre-orders are available now here.
Speaking about the original sessions, Pallbearer bassist and vocalist Joseph D. Rowland recalled the band's chaotic circumstances at the time: "During the writing and preparation for Foundations, everything was ephemeral and we were practically feral. We had no real practice space, we barely had a single working computer between the four of us. Our demos of the record consisted of something barely discernible from white noise. Nevertheless, we knew we were working towards building a set of songs we were deeply enthusiastic about."
Recording the album proved equally challenging, with corrupted files and repeated takes shaping the final product. "We slept at the studio on whatever soft surfaces we could find, waking each day to discover that some of the previous day's work had been corrupted overnight," Rowland remembered. "The guitars in particular mutated into something Sisyphean."
Despite the difficulties, the original 2014 release was hailed as a modern doom metal milestone. Yet Rowland said the band always felt there was unfinished business. "Its form did not unfold according to the original version as the numerous file corruptions, delays, and exhausted studio budget compounded into a final feverish push to finish the mix," he explained.
"We were relieved to get those massive and difficult mixes turned into finished songs just in time, but not without a nagging thought; we had to sacrifice much of the nuance we had spent so much time crafting."
More than ten years on, Pallbearer returned to the original recordings and rebuilt Foundations Of Burden from the ground up. "The songs have grown with us," Rowland continued.
"And while we hold a deep love and attachment to what we created in 2014, we also gained a fuller understanding of how we would want to re-present them if we had a chance. After years of discussion, listening and learning, we found ourselves in the position to fulfill that vision."
The 2025 Redux edition features six tracks across 55 minutes, produced by Pallbearer, mixed by Mario Quintero of Spotlights, and mastered by Adam Gonsalves. New artwork comes courtesy of painter Benjamin Vierling.
Collectors will be able to pick up several limited vinyl variants, including a band-exclusive metallic gold marble 2xLP (limited to 300 copies), a Profound Lore-only iridescent blue marble 2xLP (500 copies), and a standard black edition. Before the redux album drops, Pallbearer will perform Foundations Of Burden in full for the very first time at Seattle's Substation on September 6 as part of the venue's 10th Anniversary celebrations.
