4 hours ago 3

Paul Simon returned to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday for a performance of “The Sacred Harp” from his most recent album, 2023’s Seven Psalms. The 83-year-old singer also sat down with Colbert for an interview.

While backed by a string section, Simon delivered a tender performance of the track with an assist from his longtime partner and renowned musician in her own right, Edie Brickell. Together, they transformed the song into a gorgeous duet.

Before he took the stage, Simon chatted with Colbert about topics including his adjustments to performing live and recording music after experiencing severe hearing loss, the lyrical themes of Seven Psalms, and the lasting power of “The Sound of Silence.”

The Late Show appearance comes as Simon is on the road with his miraculous comeback tour, which kicked off in April and will wrap in early August. This week, Simon is in New York (hence the late night appearance) and will wrap up his run of shows there, followed by dates in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and more cities. The tour arrives two years after Simon walked away from performing due to losing almost all of his hearing in one ear. It was made possible through several technical efforts by Simon and the Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss. At the tour kickoff in New Orleans, he played songs like “Homeward Bound,” “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard,” “The Sound of Silence,” and more.
