Walker Scobell is still getting used to the idea that his “real life” and his Percy Jackson life don’t move at the same speed. The actor, best known as the face of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, speaks with Kyle Meredith about returning for a bigger, bruising second season of the Disney+ series, navigating the weird time warp between filming and release dates, and what it’s like realizing audiences are watching a version of you that no longer quite exists. Listen above or wherever you get your podcasts.
Looking back, Scobell says he didn’t obsessively prep between seasons, choosing instead to live his life and come back refreshed. “When I’m filming something, that’s all I think about,” he explains. “When I’m not, I kind of drop it completely… Weirdly enough that was the best prep I could have done.” That distance helped him return to Percy with a clearer head, even if it’s jarring to watch earlier episodes later. “By the time it comes out, you’re a completely different person,” he says, noting how long post-production can stretch things out. “In everybody else’s mind this is new, and to you it’s been a thing for years.”
That sense of whiplash carries over into other projects too, including Looking Through Water, which pairs Scobell with Michael Douglas in what he jokingly claims may have been the actor’s retirement trigger. “I genuinely think he decided to retire because of me,” Scobell laughs, recalling peppering Douglas with questions while trapped together on a boat for days.
Back in the Percy world, Season 2 ramps up the physical demands, with extended stunt prep, long nights, and entire sequences that never make the final cut. “You always gotta be 100%,” he says. “You never know what’s gonna end up canon.”
