PETA Thanks Ozzy Osbourne, Doesn’t Mention Bats

Following Ozzy Osbourne’s death, the animal rights organization PETA released a statement praising the legendary vocalist for “the gentle side he showed to animals.” It’s a touching tribute, up there with the best of the ones from his peers, and no, the word “bat” does not come up.

Instead, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals highlighted Osbourne’s work on behalf of cats, using his platform to raise awareness about the cruelty of declawing surgeries. The statement reads,

Ozzy Osbourne was a legend and a provocateur, but PETA will remember the “Prince of Darkness” most fondly for the gentle side he showed to animals — most recently cats, by using his fame to decry painful, crippling declawing mutilations. Ozzy may have been the singer, but his wife, Sharon, and his daughter, Kelly, were of one voice when it meant protecting animals. Ozzy will be missed by animal advocates the world over.

Osbourne bit the head off a bat on drugs January 20th, 1982. Afterwards, he maintained that he had believed it was a rubber toy. Later in life he reformed into a literal PETA poster child — a true animal rights hero — though he kept a sense of humor about the bat, even selling plush bat dolls with detachable heads. Below, enjoy a clip of him lovingly cursing out his cat.
