Turns out that Redmanmade quite a pretty penny from his guest appearance on Christina Aguilera’s hit song, “Dirrty.”
While appearing on Red Bull’s Spiral freestyle series, Redman also shared in a separate clip how he came to work with Aguilera and the large payment he received from the collaboration.
“Christina is, like, one of my favorite collabs,” he said, noting that what led to them working together was “Let’s Get Dirty,” a song Redman did with DJ Kool that Aguilera liked.
“[DJ Kool] made a R&B/pop version of that record,” the rapper continued. “So I got on the record and after that, that s**it took off. We was everywhere, bro. She brought me on tour, we was overseas. That album, [Stripped], was one of her biggest albums.”
“And we was everywhere and I got to actually see how a pop artist shakes and moves through this industry, and it’s another level than hip-hop,” he added. “And plus, my publishing check? Oh my God! My publishing check, ni**a? I couldn’t believe I got that much money for one verse. It was over, like, $250k, my first check.”
Back in 2002, the same year “Dirrty” was released, Aguilera spoke with CD:UK about how the collaboration came about.
“I’m a big fan of Redman… and he did a song called ‘Let’s Get Dirty,’ which was a huge hit and I love that song,” she said at the time, adding, “And experiencing the club life myself, being 21, turning 21 over the past year, I wanted my first single to kind of have that hip-hop, club feel.”
