Any time you hear Rico Nasty trill the word "Kennyyyyyyy" on a song's intro, you know you're about to hear some shit. Rico and producer Kenneth Blume have both made a whole lot of music with a whole lot of people, but one might argue that the two of them made their best music together, back when Blume went by the name Kenny Beats. Remember when they made Anger Management together in 2019? That was the best. Now, Blume is going by his government name, and he's about to appear on a whole lot of year-end lists for producing Geese's Getting Killed. But Kenny still has beats, and he gave one of them to his old friend Rico.
Rico Nasty's got lots of stuff going on, too. She released her album LETHAL earlier this year. She's about to make her acting debut on the Apple TV+ show Margo's Got Money Troubles. A couple of weeks ago, Hayley Williams ran up onstage with Rico in LA. Today, she releases "Pepper," the new single where she reunites with Kenneth Blume. It's not a Butthole Surfers cover. Instead, it's Rico rapping hard over a charged-up Kenny beat, and it sounds like it could've come out in 2018. Here's what Rico says about it:
Shout out to the DMV for that eight count -- we listened to a bunch of Baby Jamo and SlimeGetEm. I opened up to Kenny about how living in California made me feel like I lost the essence of trap music, so I tapped into some of the artists I was listening to and just made a Rico version. When we made it, it wasn’t supposed to come out because it was almost like a warm-up record. After playing it for a lot of friends and playing it on some nights out, I realized it was much more than that. This song was just all around fun to make, and I missed working with Kenny and watching the songs be built from start to finish.
There is a lot of energy on this track. Listen below.
A deluxe edition of LETHAL is set to come out by the end of the year, though it doesn't have a release date yet.
