Riot Shift highlight the duality of beauty and chaos on their debut album, SCAR SANCTUARY, landing on Aggressive Records.
For nearly a decade, German duo Riot Shift have been elevating hard dance on a worldwide scale. They’re known for blending their rock star attitude with the genre’s aggressive drive, and the scene has fallen in love with the result. The duo have taken advantage of this momentum, bringing their project to stages like Defqon.1, Intents Festival, REBiRTH, and so many more.
A few years ago, Riot Shift took on the mission of building up their live show, Dystopia, which was characterized by hard dance music with pop punk and metal elements. This critically acclaimed performance graced key events such as Reverze, Shockerz, and Dropzone Festival, standing out on any lineup lucky enough to bill them.
Riot Shift put on the Dystopia live show for three years straight, but they still felt like something was missing. During an active year on the release and touring front in 2025, they quietly mulled over what else they could offer the scene. In February, it became clear as they took to social media to announce their first-ever album, SCAR SANCTUARY, landing on Aggressive Records.
One day after the album drop is a release party under the same name on May 9 at Turbinenhalle Oberhausen in Germany. Fans in attendance can expect a unique experience with a 360-degree stage, a stunning lineup, and special Riot Shift performances. “It will be really intimate, and we can’t wait to experience it with you guys,” they said. “You’ll have 24 hours to listen to the album and then experience it with us.”

SCAR SANCTUARY begins with the “GENESIS” of destruction. Fans will immediately recognize the pop punk vocals that Riot Shift have mastered, which are backed by rolling hi-hats and an eerie melody. Instead of a traditional buildup, Riot Shift opt to launch listeners into a brutal drop built on industrial kicks and distorted screeches.
The climax of “GENESIS” is characterized by melodic arpeggiated chords, highlighting the duality of chaos and euphoria on this album. Rest assured, though, Riot Shift plunge back into destruction on the final drop. Listeners are then greeted by the title track, “SCAR SANCTUARY,” and this is where Riot Shift truly set the stage for the atmosphere of the album.
Most hardstyle albums use melodic drops in the title tracks, but Riot Shift took a risk by keeping the industrial elements to showcase their artistic vision. While arguably a bold choice, keeping it harder fits the Riot Shift brand, and the record remains stellar even without a melodic climax.
“KILL THE ACHE” gives you a breather amid the chaos as they showcase their pop punk influences with vocals accompanied by elements like heavy guitar riffs and rock drum patterns. It’s not too often that Riot Shift display their melodic side, but “KILL THE ACHE” does it perfectly.
A euphoric melody leads into an uplifting drop that feels different but not out of place. A heavy rock bridge connects the song and leads listeners into an exhilarating final drop featuring drifting screeches and reverse bass. Last but not least, Riot Shift dives back to their roots to pull out their signature laser kicks for old time’s sake — a true treat for any loyal fan!
Next comes one of the greatest collaborations of the year. Riot Shift teamed up with one of EDM Identity’s Artists to Watch in 2025, Dr. Donk, on “DROWN.” Dr. Donk represents the polar opposite of traditional hardstyle, but this was one of the few times that melodic elements and brutality complemented each other to elevate the record. Don’t be fooled, though. Dr. Donk still gave “DROWN” the doctor treatment with obnoxiously loud and distorted kick drums that tickle listeners’ brains in just the right spot.

The next two records, “ERASE ME” and “WHERE HAVE YOU GONE,” carry similar vibes where rock music gets infused with raw hardstyle to deliver the perfect dose of distorted energy. Attentive listeners may even notice that Riot Shift experimented with outside elements like PVC kicks in “WHERE HAVE YOU GONE,” proving that they can master anything in hard dance.
SCAR SANCTUARY takes a dark turn in the second half of the album, beginning with “REAPER.” Instead of the pop punk listeners have come to love throughout, Riot Shift turn it up a notch and introduces heavy metal into the mix. Aggressive vocals shout, “I’m your reaper, b*tch! Six feet under!” which tells you all you need to know about where we’re headed.
When the reaper knocks, your time has come, and this is timed perfectly with a door knock before being thrown into the drop. Riot Shift blend classic hardstyle synths, reminiscent of Showtek’s older work, before introducing the increasingly heavy raw kicks with eerie vocals. There is a melody of sorts right before the second drop, but it’s only used to fake you out before throwing you back into the chaos.
“MAKE ME MAD” serves as an extension of the darker portion of SCAR SANCTUARY, and all I can say is to proceed with caution. Aggressive vocals, loud screeches, and industrial kicks are littered throughout this track, which is only fit for the most extreme fans. After pushing listeners into the depths of raw hardstyle, Riot Shift then deliver fan service as Anderex‘s highly anticipated live edit of their collaboration, “HYPERDIMENSION,” finally gets an official release!
If you’ve been to any Anderex or Riot Shift in the past year, you’ve definitely heard this track (we US fans have been hearing it all over social media), and the official release is as glorious as we imagined. Anderex’s reverse bass kick drum that went viral in the hard techno space is on full display, and truly, nobody does it better than the man himself. While only one minute in length, this track packs a punch. It’s great to finally have a release after so long.
Riot Shift then link up with hard techno phenom KARAH on “RAGE PROTOCOL.” This track rides the fine line between rawstyle and hard techno, but it works as both artists are at the top of their game in their respective scenes. It can easily fit in a set of either style, and that’s what makes this team-up unique.

In true Riot Shift fashion, there needed to be some surprises in the last two tracks of SCAR SANCTUARY. Cyber Gunz had the honor of remixing “PIECES,” and they did not disappoint. The core of the original track is maintained as bright vocals backed by uplifting melodies make a return.
The drops, however, purely exist for shock factor as Cyber Gunz injects “PIECES” with disgusting kicks that simply pull a nasty bass face out of listeners. The final drop uses a unique technique where the kicks roll similarly to a psytrance bassline while keeping the heavy distortion of Deutscher krach.
SCAR SANCTUARY closes with Riot Shift’s edit of “TILL MY HEART STOPS” with Levenkhan and Bennykaay. Riot Shift turn up the tempo and distortion to add in Deutscher krach kicks into their hardcore anthem. The original record perfectly encapsulates all artists’ styles between Riot Shift’s rock elements and Levenkhan’s catchy vocals, but this edit simply takes it to another level with obnoxious kickdrums that are sure to destroy speakers.
After listening to SCAR SANCTUARY over five times all the way through, it’s clear to me that this is Riot Shift’s best work to date without any debate. I’ve been a fan for many years, and I can tell that they used all of the knowledge they’ve gained from their years in the scene for this body of work. There’s truly something for every fan of Riot Shift in SCAR SANCTUARY — even the ones who thought they would never release anything better than “SAME AGAIN” (yes, I’m talking about myself).
While the album highlights the entire spectrum of the harder styles, it never strays away from Riot Shift’s signature style or feels out of place. This is no easy task as they highlighted zaagkicks, hard techno, rock music, and everything in between across the tracklist. Even if you aren’t a fan of Riot Shift and this is your first exposure to them, I’m confident that everyone can find something to love in SCAR SANCTUARY.
As my early pick for hard dance album of the year, SCAR SANCTUARY is absolutely a must-listen. I can’t wait until they can grace the US with their presence and, hopefully, a SCAR SANCTUARY live show!
