If you crave covers of poignant spirtiuals, then you’re in luck: Robert Plant and Saving Grace have released their take on “Gospel Plough.” The track serves as the second dispatch from the group’s forthcoming album, Saving Grace.
Like the band’s previously-released cover of Low’s “Everybody’s Song,” their rendition of “Gospel Plough” is an intricate reworking told distinctly through the lens of roots music both decidedly modern and far older still. Through that perspective, “Gospel Plough” transforms from this “centuries-old spiritual number,” according to a statement, into this slow-burning, uber sensuous folk ballad that’ll grip you mightily in both heart and mind.
As previously reported, Plant first joined up with Saving Grace (vocalist Suzi Dian, drummer Oli Jefferson, guitarist Tony Kelsey, banjo and string player Matt Worley, and cellist Barney Morse-Brown) for a series of live shows just prior to COVID. When they were finally able to gather together again sometime later, the collective spent some several years developing and recording a “song book for the lost and found.”
The 10-track album was then officially recorded between April 2019 and January 2025 in the Cotswolds and on the Welsh Borders. It follows a suite of stirring Plant album releases, most notably lullaby and… The Ceaseless Roar (2014) and Carry Fire (2017) as well as 2021’s Raise the Roof with Alison Krauss.
Saving Grace arrives September 26th via Nonesuch Records (pre-order here). The album also features covers/reimaginings from Memphis Minnie, Bob Mosley (Moby Grape), Blind Willie Johnson, Martha Scanlan, and Sarah Siskind, among others. Plant and Saving Grace will also tour behind the record later this fall, with a handful of dates across Boston, Chicago, and Seattle for November. Get tickets here.
