Robyn Announces New Album Sexistential: Hear Two Songs

2 days ago 4

For the first time in nearly eight years, a new Robyn album is upon us. And this time around, she's horny. Robyn's last album was Honey, which came out in 2018 and which was her first in nine years. Recently, Robyn has been teasing a new LP, and she dropped her excellent single "Dopamine" in November. Today, she makes it official. Her latest album has the beautifully ridiculous title Sexistential, and it's coming out in March.

Robyn co-produced Sexistential with longtime collaborator Klas Åhlund, and she says that it'll feel "like a spaceship coming through the atmosphere at a really high speed and crash landing. That’s how I felt, like I’d had all these experiences searching too far out into space, and now I’m crashing back into myself." Allow her to continue:

Exploring my sensual life is the same feeling as when I make a good song. It’s such a beautiful kind of sensitive vibration that takes so much work to keep afloat. I feel like the purpose of my life is to stay horny — it doesn’t even have to be about sex, but it’s feeling sensual and attracted to things that I enjoy, and not letting anything take over that.

Along with the album announcement, Robyn has two new tracks out today, and they're the two that she performed at her Brooklyn show on New Year's Eve. One of those songs is a reunion with an old friend and collaborator. As a teenager in the late '90s, Robyn recorded a few gigantic international hits with Max Martin, and they were Martin's first really big songs before he became the go-to guy for the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC. According to some reports, Martin started working with Britney Spears in part because he thought she'd be less headstrong than Robyn, and some people at Spears' label originally imagined her as an American Robyn.

Robyn co-wrote her new single "Talk To Me" with Max Martin, as well as Klas Åhlund and regular Martin collaborator Oscar Holter. It's a great song, a bubbly synth banger that fits right into the wheelhouses of both Robyn and Martin. Casper Wackerhausen-Sejersen directed the song's choreography-heavy, lightly NSFW video. Robyn says, "I wrote it during the pandemic when there was no way to be physical. I like talkers, that turns me on.” It's the first song that she and Martin made together since 2010's "Time Machine." Here's the video.

Robyn's other new song is "Sexistential," the new LP's title track. Robyn and Åhlund wrote this one, and Robyn teased it at Acne Studios' Paris Fashion Week show. It's one of the songs where Robyn raps — in this case, about looking for random hookups while she was pregnant via IVF. Robyn says that she wrote it after reading André 3000's line about how nobody would want to hear him rap about a colonoscopy: "It was my cue. I have to do this, I have to write a rap about IVF." She'll perform it on Colbert tonight. Check it out below.
