Bristol-based trailblazer Ruth Royall has entered her queen era with the release of her debut album, proving that she’s one badass multi-hyphenate.
Ruth Royall is known for her richly eclectic music career. She’s a vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, DJ, producer, label boss, and now, mother. Even with that long list of duties, she’s found time to release her debut album, Queen, on her eponymous label, Royall Sound. Like her album title suggests, Royall has entered her queen era, stepping behind the scenes and baring it all in ten vocal-driven tracks. Queen shows she can do it all as the album weaves seamlessly between genres.
Royall carefully assembled a list of collaborators that points to a knowledge beyond her years. Working with artists such as Joe Lenzie from Sigma, Brad Ellis from Afterglow, Dread MC, Doctor P, and Ekko & Sidetrack elevated her sound to the next level. “I’ve worked with some of my favourite collaborators across the whole project,” she shared. “And it’s been amazing to just create what feels good without worrying about fitting into a box.”
Though Royall plays with different genres throughout Queen, the songs flow into one another organically. They’re empowering, emotional, playful, and personal. Lead single “Forevermore” got everyone talking as it’s a certified DnB heater with soaring vocals, raw emotion, and high energy. “Bop” is an infectious, glitchy garage and DnB track with powerful vocals and lyrics focused on female promotion and empowerment.
“Strangers” delves into Royall’s future bass side, fusing her soulful vocals with warm synths and syncopated rhythms. “Butterfly” is an uplifting garage-house love song with a driving, four-on-the-floor beat and reverberated vocals. “Brightest Star” is Royall’s most personal song, featuring a recording of her son’s first words. The track is light-hearted trance magic with Royall’s love shining through.
Royall continues to prove that she is a force to be reckoned with, determined to create space for herself and others. An activist, she’s known for her hard work, independence, grit, and tenacity, all of which she pours into her songs. Queen is authentically Royall. It shows the music world that she is unapologetically her.
