The trailer for season four of Welcome To Wrexham has been released, and it pits Ryan Reynolds against an unlikely foe: sports veteran Tom Brady.

Welcome To Wrexham is the docuseries that follows Reynolds and his journey with Wrexham AFC, the Welsh football club he co-owns with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Rob McElhenney.

Season four sees the club face tough competition in a new division, with one of them being Birmingham FC, which is co-owned by Brady. “He’s not playing, thank God,” sighs Reynolds in the beginning of the trailer, and he pauses to ask: “Is he allowed to play?” The new season is due May 15 in the US, with a UK release date as-yet-announced.

Brady, as shown in news footage, is seen telling a reporter: “It’s a friendly competition… Well, not so friendly.” He’s also seen with McElhenney watching a clip of an It’s Always Sunny episode, in which McElhenney’s Mac suggests to Dee (Kaitlin Olson) to break Brady’s arm. “What’s wrong with you?” Brady asked McElhenney, grinning.

This season will show the club and its co-owners deal with its renewed success and growing pains. Per an official logline via Deadline: “The Club achieved back-to-back promotions to bring the Reds into the English Football League’s League One for the first time in 20 years.

“As they continue to rise in the pyramid, the stakes get higher with a new level of intensity, competition and costs, all while the Club continues to be plagued with injury and fans demand the signing of new talent.

“Dedicated staff and supporters celebrate the team’s climb toward the Premiership while bracing against the new-found challenges that come with each new tier up the EFL. Will Wrexham AFC rise to the challenge and do what no team has ever done before?”

Alongside football, McElhenney has been an avid and outspoken support of American football – as seen earlier this year when his hometown team, the Philadelphia Eagles, won the annual Super Bowl.

McElhenney also told NME that “the song I can’t get out of my head” was the Eagles’ anthem ‘Fly, Eagles, Fly’, a song that had been on loop for him in the lead-up to the Super Bowl.

“In the US, sports anthems aren’t as popular as they are in the UK – in Wrexham, there’s so many football chants and songs which are a fun way for the crowd to interact – but the Eagles’ fight song is Number One for me right now!”

As for Reynolds – who is set to star in the live-action/animation hybrid film Animal Friends later this year – he was revealed in February to be one of the highest paid actors of 2024 alongside his Red Notice co-star Dwayne Johnson.

In NME‘s review of Welcome To Wrexham season one, Sam Moore wrote: “There’s a deepening mutual respect between the faithful and the A-listers that should blossom further, providing Wrexham kick on and progress, but you’ll have to watch the documentary to see how their most recent attempt at completing that mission pans out.

“McElhenney can rest easy for now: there’s little chance that he and Reynolds will be cast as villains in the Wrexham AFC story just yet.”
