Formed by singer-guitarist Toby Bardsley, guitarist Lawrence Bordean, bassist Adam Anderson, and drummer Beth Diana, Saint Clair first launched in April with. two sold-out showcases, followed by slots at Liverpool’s Sound City, Amsterdam’s London Calling Festival, and The Great Escape. "Gretchen" follows Saint Clair's debut single, "Too Young To Notice", also released in April, as the latest preview of a collection of songs which see Saint Clair face the realities of adulthood.
Discussing the new track, Saint Clair say: “Gretchen plays out as a ‘what if’ love letter to a partner,” Saint Clair say of the track. “It’s the intimate moment where romance and the reality of life away from each other come into the conversation”.
Something To Be Said features four tracks, serving as an introduction to the band that prioritises space and dynamics. “There is always a temptation to do too much as an instrumentalist, we’ve gone past that in favour of trying to serve the song itself,” Bardsley explains of the band's ethos. “We want to be a songs band, not a musicians’ band… sometimes you’ve gotta ask yourself what would Ringo do?”
