System Of A Down leader Serj Tankian‘s birthday was yesterday (happy belated!), and today he announced Covers, Collaborations & Collages, which will feature collaborations with electronic music giant deadmau5, New Zealand singer/songwriter Bic Runga, and Spanish composer Lucas Vidal, as well as covers of Chris de Burgh’s 1982 song “I’m Counting On You,” Armenian songwriter Ruben Hakhverdyan’s “When Death Arrives,” and more. The ten-song album comes out on October 24 via Serjical Strike Records/Create Music Group, and one new song from the project will drop each week until then. First single “Electric Dreams” is out today, and it’s a haunting, bare-bones folky song that you can stream below.
Serj says:
Similar to Foundations, these are pre-existing archival recordings, some of them from way back. I wanted to put out a record of collaborations I haven’t released before, along with covers, which I haven’t done. The rest, the collages, are parts that fit the puzzle in the same tone, the same vibe.
Meanwhile, System Of A Down have upcoming shows in NJ/NYC-area with Korn, Chicago with Avenged Sevenfold, and Toronto with Deftones (whose great new album Private Music is out today), plus support from Polyphia and Wisp on all dates. The NYC-area shows are at MetLife Stadium next week (August 27 & 28).
