Legendary children’s entertainer Shari Lewis is set to receive the documentary treatment in Shari & Lamb Chop, a new film from director Lisa D’Apolito (Love, Gilda). Watch the trailer below.

Made with the full cooperation of the Shari Lewis estate through her daughter, Mallory, the documentary chronicles Lewis’ remarkable career. It follows her journey from the 1950s CBS TV show Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts to The Shari Lewis Show in the early 1960s, and all the way through her comeback on The Charlie Horse Music Pizza in the late 1990s.

The trailer portrays Lewis as a pioneer in the early days of children’s television and details how her beloved puppet, Lamb Chop, came to define her multi-faceted career. The documentary will feature interviews with ventriloquists whom Lewis inspired, as well as archival home movies.

“Before Fred Rogers and Jim Henson, there was Shari Lewis, a children’s television pioneer whose whimsical characters and ebullient spirit have guided generations of children as they came of age,” reads the official synopsis. “But when an injury sidelined her dance aspirations, she channeled her creativity into a passion for ventriloquism, creating the now beloved sock puppet characters Charlie Horse, Hush Puppy, and, of course, Lamb Chop.”

“Shari Lewis’ life is the ultimate comeback story,” director D’Apolito said in a press statement. “Shari mesmerized and empowered generations of children and their family in believing in themselves and having fun doing it… I hope it is a film that you can go with your grandparent, parents and your children and whether you watched Shari on TV or not, it brings the magic of childhood.”

Shari & Lamb Chop will open in theaters on July 18th.
