Black Sabbath are set to play their final concert in July, and the idea of the band living on as an ABBA Voyage-style hologram show has already been floated to Sharon Osbourne.
In a new interview with Metal Hammer (via NME), Sharon said she would be open to the idea of a Sabbath hologram show, even expressing some enthusiasm about the prospects of the what the technology could accomplish in the years ahead.
“Sure I would, yeah,” Sharon said when asked if she would consider an ABBA Voyage-style show for Black Sabbath. “Technology keeps moving on and on. You can do incredible things now, so what you could do in five years will be even better. You never know what the opportunities are.”
Hologram tribute shows have been a contentious issue over the past decade, with some fans dismissing them as cash grabs that exploit an artist’s legacy. But as the technology progresses, as Sharon said, more and more legacy bands could turn to the medium.
Former Black Sabbath singer, the late Ronnie James Dio, has already been rendered in hologram form as part of the “Dio Returns” experience, while KISS have gone as far as working with the creators of ABBA Voyage, Pophouse Entertainment, for their upcoming KISS Avatar shows.
As for the real Black Sabbath’s final show, Sharon went on to say that it was “amazing” that drummer Bill Ward, with whom she has had personal beef, will be involved.
“I always say they’ve got that invisible connection between the four of them, and he’s gonna be there, which is amazing,” she said. “I’m not going to bullshit you and say we’re the best of friends. We’re not. We are such different people. But I respect Bill so much, and I’m so happy that he has agreed to come, for the band and for the fans.”
Sabbath’s final show is set for July 5th at Villa Park in Birmingham, England. Frontman Ozzy Osbourne will also be playing his final solo show that day, in addition to performances from a jam-packed lineup that features Metallica, Slayer, Guns N’ Roses, Tool, Pantera, Gojira, Halestorm, Alice in Chains, Lamb of God, Anthrax, Mastodon, and more.
