South Park’s Matt Stone Joins Primus on Drums to Cover King Crimson: Watch

South Park co-creator Matt Stone joined Primus on drums for a cover of King Crimson’s “Thela Hun Ginjeet” during their show at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles on Wednesday, August 6th.

Playing alongside Primus’ new drummer John Hoffman, Stone channeled the song’s tense mood with a driving performance behind the kit, occasionally relishing in some fills in between Hoffman’s taut grooves. “Thela Hun Ginjeet” is a common cover that Primus bandleader Les Claypool likes to play, either with Primus or with his solo project; the 1981 King Crimson single features a primal, swampy rhythm. Watch Primus and Stone’s rendition of the song below.

In addition to his duties on South Park, Stone is a multi-instrumentalist with a particular penchant for the drums; he also has a noted interest in jam bands and progressive rock. Primus is a significant band in Stone and South Park’s lore, as the California trio wrote and recorded the show’s theme song in 1997. The band was also a major part of Stone and Trey Parker’s massive South Park anniversary shows in Colorado, where the duo celebrated 25 years of South Park with performances from Primus, Ween, and Rush’s Geddy Lee.

Primus’ Greek Theater show on Wednesday was a bit of a star-studded affair; in addition to Stone’s guest appearance, Primus were joined by Bill Burr and Tool bassist Justin Chancellor for a rendition of “Too Many Puppies”; tourmate Ty Segall joined the band for a cover of Black Sabbath’s “N.I.B.”; and Tool drummer drummer Danny Carey appeared to play “My Name Is Mud” with the group. Primus completes their “Onward and Upward” tour tonight in Sacramento; revisit our Two For the Road interview with Les Claypool and Ty Segall from earlier this summer.

Stone, on the other hand, has just launched South Park’s 27th season, and both he and Parker seem to be having a lot of fun taking shots at the current administration.
