‘Split Fiction’ studio are already working on new game – and it could be their best yet

Hazelight, the studio behind Split Fiction and It Takes Two, are already working on their new game.

Split Fiction was released earlier this month and sold more than two million copies in its first weekend. It’s also become the highest-rated game of the year, beating out competition from AAA titles such as Avowed and Monster Hunter Wilds.

However in a new interview with Skill Up, Hazelight boss Josef Fares revealed the studio is already working on a new title.

Fares said the reaction to Split Fiction has been “extra special” because “it’s the best received game we’ve ever put out.”

“We’re all feeling super happy but for me personally, as soon as a game is out, I’m done with it. Now, I’m fully-focused on the next thing, which we have already started,” he continued.

Work began on the unnamed game a month ago and, according to Fares, Hazelight doesn’t like to spend more than four years on development. The project already has a complete, 130-page outline that covers the game’s story and some of the gameplay ideas.

“You don’t get tired or stressed out if you really love something, and I love video games so much,” Fares said about not taking a break between titles.

“It’s not like we’re worried about how do we top [Split Fiction]?. Just wait until [you see] what we do next. That’s how confident we are in what we’re doing. I believe we can top Split Fiction,” he added. “People are very happy and excited at Hazelight. We feel like we can do better and I’m super, super excited.”

In a five-star review, NME wrote: “Split Fiction is an incredibly fun game of ideas and possibilities, on both screen and sofa. Because virtually every battle, puzzle and chase sequence requires close collaboration between the differently-attributed characters, the two-player co-op experience becomes one of collaboration and bonding as intense as that between Mio and Zoe.

“And believe us, this is a brain-frying ride you’ll want to share – not least, come the ultra-meta final throes, to have a witness confirming it’s all actually happening.”

In other news, Ubisoft has a special “anti-harassment plan” in place for the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows – but developers are still being advised to not post about their involvement on social media.
