Our recurring feature series Track by Track sees artists guiding readers through each song on their new release. Today, indie rock trio Sunflower Bean dive into their new album, Mortal Primetime.

A lot has changed over the past decade for Sunflower Bean. As Julia Cumming, Nick Kivlen, and Olive Faber all came of age while simultaneously pursuing a music career, the songs they’ve released over the years have intimately documented their growth.

Such is the case with their fourth full-length offering, Mortal Primetime, out this Friday, April 25th. Almost three years in the making, the album traverses the depths of love, pain, trauma, and healing as the trio becomes more comfortable with understanding how the world works. Now past their formative experiences with each of those themes, Sunflower Bean are now reflecting on what they’ve learned from allowing themselves to feel a full range of emotions.

“The truth is, I create my best work when I’m happy, not broken,” Kivlen tells Consequence, looking back at how he previously wrecked his own emotional stability in the pursuit of creating art steered by misery.

Sharing a similar sentiment, Cumming explains, “I have been lucky to know the sugary highs and molasses lows of love, and I can’t deny their marks on my soul. Every day it shapes who I am and who I continue to become.” Kivlen adds, “Love isn’t about trying to change people, but about embracing the gruesome depths of who they are.”

Sunflower Bean are scheduled to tour across Europe and North America in support of the project this spring. Grab tickets to see them in concert here.
