Kevin Parker debuted a new, unreleased Tame Impala song following his DJ set at Primavera Sound in Barcelona last weekend.
Tame Impala was a later add to the Primavera Sound schedule, and initially performed a DJ set at the Cupra stage on Friday evening; however, Parker reprised his DJ set format after the festival’s conclusion on Saturday evening for a surprise show at the Barcelona venue Nitsa Club, where he unearthed the new track. “Do you guys want to hear a new Tame Impala song?,” Parker asked the eager crowd in the midst of his DJ set. “You’re gonna be the first ones to hear it, you realize… there’s no going back from this point on.”
He proceeded to play the thumping, house-inspired track, which seems to split the difference between the most upbeat modes of Tame Impala’s last album, 2020’s The Slow Rush, and his dance pop-centered production work for the likes of Dua Lipa and Mark Ronson. It’s not exactly a ‘Tame Impala-goes-full-EDM’ pivot, though, with psychedelic synths cascading throughout the song and a bumping bassline beneath. Watch a fan-captured clip of Tame Impala’s new song below.
Tame Impala hasn’t released a new album in five years, but Parker has nonetheless kept busy. He won his first-ever Grammy Award as Tame Impala this year for his collaboration with Justice, “Neverender,” which we named as one of the best songs of 2024. Meanwhile, he invented his own instrument, The Orchid, sold his entire songwriting catalog to Sony Music Publishing, and contributed to the Barbie soundtrack with collaborator Mark Ronson.
