Matty Matheson, chef, restauranteur, and cast member of FX’s dramedy The Bear, can add a new profession to his already-loaded resume: hardcore punk frontman.
Matheson debuted his new band, Pig Pen, at Sneaky Dee’s in his native Toronto last weekend, performing a rousing set alongside founding Alexisonfire member Wade McNeil. Helping round out the five piece are Daniel Romano on guitar, Ian Ski Romano on drums, and Tommy Major on bass. Matheson announced the new project back in March, writing on Instagram, “A FEW OLD FRIENDS GOT TOGETHER A COUPLE YEARS AGO AND WROTE AND RECORDED 10 SONGS OVER 2 DAYS. WE JUST WANTED TO HANGOUT AND SEE WHAT’S UP.”
The band hasn’t announced when those recordings will see the light of day yet, so the fan-captured videos of their Sneaky Dee’s set serve as the first previews of their furious sound. As evidenced by his role as handyman Neil Fak on The Bear, Matheson’s definitely got some charisma, and his high-pitched roar fits right into Pig Pen’s power shredding. Watch videos of their full band debut below.
Those who’ve been following Matheson’s dual career in entertainment and cooking are likely familiar with his passion for hardcore. Matheson has worn Power Trip and Harm’s Way shirts in The Bear, appeared on the Knotfest podcast HardLore, and in 2019, released a double LP and a zine, fittingly titled A Cookbook.
Meanwhile, Matheson also serves as an executive producer for The Bear, which is expected to return for its fourth season this June.
