Universal is continuing its love affair with movie re-releases this September, as John Hughes’ The Breakfast Club will celebrate its 40th anniversary by returning to theaters on September 7th and 10th.
Originally released on February 15th, 1985, the classic film features a simple premise, as we spend a day with five unlikely delinquents forced to serve detention together, bonding over their similarities by the end. The movie made young cast members Anthony Michael Hall, Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, and Judd Nelson into household names, and cemented Hughes’ status as a defining voice in the world of teen comedies — not just in the ’80s, but for all time. And Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” remains one of the all-time great movie themes.
As Ringwald noted herself in 2024, there are parts of The Breakfast Club that haven’t aged particularly well. But it remains an enduring part of film history, with an iconic sequence that decades later inspires future Congresspeople to dance around. Advance tickets are available now through Fandango.
