The Mountain Goats Recruit Tommy Stinson to Perform “Cold at Night” on Colbert: Watch

3 weeks ago 14

The Mountain Goats returned to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night, where The Replacements’ Tommy Stinson accompanied the group on “Cold at Night” from their latest album, Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan. Watch a replay below.

Backed by a full string section, Jon Wurster’s steady drumming buoyed John Darnielle’s theatrical vocals, Stinson’s heavy bassline, and a pair of backup singers who delivered harmony and response vocals written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Put together, it made for a layered, entertaining performance as he sang about the aftermath of a shipwreck.
