Heavy-hearted indie rock trio the Pines Of Rome started in Providence, Rhode Island in the late '90s. They released a couple of albums and played shows with like-minded acts like Songs: Ohia, Silkworm, and Bonnie "Prince" Billy before breaking up in the early '00s. During the pandemic, the former bandmates got back in touch and started writing music together, becoming a four-piece with the addition of bassist Steven Kimura. In 2023, they released their reunion album The Unstruck Bell. Now, they've got another record on the way.
Seth Manchester recorded and mixed the Pines Of Rome's upcoming LP When You Are As Full As The Moon, which gets its title from an ancient zen Buddhist poem. Brian Jablonski plays pedal steel on a couple of songs, including the lead single "Kali's Tongue." It's a slow, serious six-minute meditation that seems like it's beamed straight from circa-1999 college radio, in the best way. I wonder if it's weird for these guys to play venues where the air isn't 60% cigarette smoke. Check it out below.
