The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas Says He No Longer Speaks To Bandmate Nick Valensi

For the Strokes heads this might not be surprise, but frontman Julian Casablancas and guitarist Nick Valensi are not on the best of terms. Their distant relationship, or rather lack of relationship, came up during an episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast that was released this past Wednesday.

In the episode, Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer look back on the making of their Lonely Island single and SNL short "Boombox," which featured Casablancas. For the episode, Casablancas provided a last minute voice note about the experience, reflecting on how the comedy trio's creative respect for each other and playfulness was a significant influence on him.

"It was, I would say, very inspiring for me to see you guys, how people work together respecting each other and playing off each other, which was kind of unfortunately lacking in my experience in creative endeavors," Casablancas said. "You guys are kind of like a band, I feel, a great band. It did feel almost like a test in a way because you guys work with such big names."

He goes on to recall a funny bit where he messed with the chords of the song and Taccone blatantly said, "I don't think that's better." Casablancas continued, "I remember thinking, oh man, I gotta stay on task." Casablancas mentions that Joanna Newsom, Samberg's partner, was also there: "She really liked it, and I thought, OK, cool. An ultra-talented mega musician that I respected is loving it, so that's good."

Then Casablancas goes back to talking about the Lonely Island's dynamic, slipping in a dig towards Valensi:

It doesn't ever veer into that self-seriousness that I feel like musicians and other artists can veer into. That was really the best and very inspiring. A lot of that energy was maybe subconsciously brought to what I was figuring out with the Voidz and how we operate and stuff, and helped improve the Stokes thing too -- at least with the three guys that I'm friends with, work with, and talk with still. Sorry Nick, just kidding [laughs]. Yeah, but working with people who respect each other is a necessity I discovered. You guys taught me that.
