Thundercat is back with two new songs: “Children of the Baked Potato” (featuring Remi Wolf) and “I Wish I Didn’t Waste Your Time.”
The bassist, singer, songwriter, and producer recruited Greg Kurstin for the pair of new songs, which arrive off a string of collaborative tracks over the last several years. “I Wish I Didn’t Waste Your Time” is a kaleidoscopic slice of R&B, with harmony-laden vocals from Thundercat and lyrics about self-doubt and regret. The song technically serves as Thundercat’s first solo single in over five years.
“Children of the Baked Potato,” on the other hand, features fellow funk connoisseur Remi Wolf and takes its name from a beloved jazz club in Los Angeles that only serves baked potatoes. “[Remi]’s a child of the Baked Potato like me,” Thundercat said in a press release. “She knew exactly what the song needed. And it was wild to watch her make it happen. The more I listen to the song, it’s clear there was no one better I could have picked.” Stream both new songs below.
Thundercat hasn’t released a new album since 2020’s It Is What It Is, but he’s remained busy, collaborating with acts like Justice, Tame Impala, Gorillaz, Silk Sonic, Yo Gabba Gabba, and more.
He’s also heading on a North American tour this fall; the limited run coincides with Thundercat’s upcoming appearances at Miami’s III Points Festival and Los Angeles’ Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival. See Thundercat’s tour dates below and get tickets here.
