Tom Cavanagh has played everything from lovable dreamers to mad scientists, but his latest role finds him somewhere between small-town detective and sly chess master. Speaking with Kyle Meredith about Acorn TV’s new mystery series You’re Killing Me, Cavanagh praised the show’s sharp writing, layered storytelling, and finale that surprised even the cast. Built around a murder mystery that unfolds one case at a time while feeding a larger narrative, the series stars Cavanagh alongside Brooke Shields and Amalia Williamson. What impressed Cavanagh most was how much trust the scripts inspired. “It is well written. It looks like it’s maybe a murder of the week and then it dovetails into something else,” he says, describing how seemingly unrelated storylines gradually collide. By the time the cast reached production on the finale, they knew they had something special. “This is a crackerjack of a finale. The pace is moving. Your heart is beating. You don’t know where it’s going. The stakes are life and death.” He repeatedly redirects credit toward the writers, noting that the strongest lines often require the least embellishment. Discussing one of his favorite exchanges, he explains, “When you get good writing, it’s just like, ‘I just have to say the line.’”
Cavanagh also talks about building Detective Jack, a character who avoids attention while quietly proving himself worthy of every challenge thrown his way. Drawing inspiration from his brother, a Canadian prosecutor, he says, “Jack doesn’t want plaudit and acclaim. He wants to get the job done.” Knowing where the character’s story was headed proved equally important. “Knowing that you’re going to have an opportunity to shoot the gun off in the third act allows you to keep the powder dry in the first act,” he explains, describing how understanding the ending helped him calibrate every performance choice along the way. By the time the mystery reaches its conclusion, Cavanagh says he was just as surprised as viewers are likely to be.
