Rocker and activist Tom Morello is once again using his platform to decry political and humanitarian injustices, this time targeting Donald Trump’s militaristic use of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The guitarist kept is curt in the title of his new Spotify playlist: “Fuck ICE.”
Totaling 65 songs, the playlist is a deep curation of protest songs and politically charged anthems, with an emphasis on tracks that celebrate diversity and inclusion.
Teased Morello in an Instagram post: “A rocking little soundtrack to enjoy while you drive those bastards out of your neighborhood!”
Of course, there’s some Rage Against the Machine in there (“Killing in the Name,” “Prayer of the Refugee,” etc.) and obvious shoe-ins like Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” and Bob Marley’s “Get Up, Stand Up.” But Morello also flexes his deep knowledge of the political song, from the folk protest songs of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger to modern auteurs of the form such as Bruce Springsteen (“Across the Border,” “The Ghost of Tom Joad”).
The playlist is also genre diverse, featuring hip-hop inclusions (GZA, Public Enemy, Cypress Hill), punk rock (The Clash, Refused), garage rock (The White Stripes), and country (Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt). Morello also included Kneecap, a band he recently dubbed “the Rage Against the Machine of now.”
Meanwhile, Morello will be hitting the road for headlining dates across North America this fall. Get tickets here.
