The Toronto death metal band Tomb Mold has quite a reputation for pushing the boundaries of their genre; their album The Enduring Spirit was one of our favorites of 2023. Even as that band thrives, the members of Tomb Mold have other things going on. Guitarist Derrick Vella makes dreamy, proggy, spaced-out doom as one half of the great duo Dream Unending. Two other Tomb Mold members are also in Daydream Plus, a new band that makes sophisticated instrumental math-rock.
The excellently named Tomb Mold guitarist Payson Power leads Daydream Plus, and he's joined by his bandmate Max Klebanoff on drums, as well as bassist Kevin Sia. The trio started in 2020, and they've released a couple of EPs. This summer, they'll drop their full-length debut Second Last Day of Summer. The band recorded the LP with Darren McGill, and Arthur Rizk mixed it and mastered it. Guests include American Football’s Steve Lamos, Fox Capture Plan's Ryo Kishimoto, and the War On Drugs/Destroyer contributor Joseph Shabason.
In a press release, Payson Power says that he "just wanted the album to feel like opening a can of pop on an above-average day." You can hear that impulse at work on lead single "Speed Limit," a florid and playful jazz-rock jam. Check it out below.
