Tool’s Adam Jones and Danny Carey were on hand at the Canelo vs. Crawford boxing match on Saturday (September 13th) at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, where the duo performed a brief intro ahead of the fight.

By brief, we mean about 75 seconds of tectonic noise, with the duo churning out a freestyle freakout. Carey relentlessly pounded away on his kit, hitting rolling fills across his massive rack of tom drums, while Jones dug into a Tool-esque staccato riff before busting out a finger slide for a rousing slab of feedback.

It sounds like the climactic intro to a Tool song, but instead of the full band kicking into a song, it preluded the evening’s the main event: a super middleweight title fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford that streamed live on Netflix. Crawford ended up winning the fight by unanimous decision to become the undisputed super middleweight champion.

Next up, Tool are set to perform their first concerts in Hawaii in nearly 15 years in December (get tickets here). After that, the prog-metal vets will look to continue work on the follow-up to 2019’s Fear Inoculum.

As previously reported, Jones and Maynard James Keenan recently offered an update on the album’s progress, with Jones stating that he’s “got lots of riffs” in the tank. Meanwhile, Maynard added that the band plans to spend 2026 “writing.”
