In Top Gun, Cruise stars as hot-shot pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, with Anthony Edwards as his best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, Kelly McGillis as Top Gun instructor and Maverick’s love interest Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, and Val Kilmer as his rival Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.
Directed by Tony Scott, the thrilling action flick drew audiences to the tune of $353.8 million at the global box office during its initial theatrical run against a production budget of $15 million. In 2013, Top Gun was re-released in IMAX 3D for six days. It was later re-released in Dolby Cinema in 2021.
36 years later, Cruise returned in Top Gun: Maverick alongside Kilmer, leading a new generation of Top Gun graduates, including Miles Teller and Glen Powell. Nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, it remains the highest-grossing movie of Cruise’s career with $1.5 billion at the global box office.
This isn’t the only Top Gun news to emerge in the past several days. On Thursday, May 16th, Paramount Pictures confirmed Top Gun 3 is in development during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas.
