With Super Bowl LX set to be played at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco this February, Metallica‘s name has been tossed around as a potential halftime-show performer, with drummer Lars Ulrich even saying that he and his bandmates would jump at the chance to play in their adopted hometown.

Chalk up previous Super Bowl performer Usher as the latest supporter of the idea, which appears to be gaining some momentum in the mainstream. The R&B star, who had the honor of headlining the Super Bowl Halftime Show in Las Vegas in 2024, was recently questioned on the streets by TMZ on who he’d like to see take the stage during the big game in San Francisco. Before being swept away to a nearby car, Usher was quick to answer: “Metallica.”

The Bay Area connection makes Metallica a suitable choice, even though heavy metal has never really been represented at the Super Bowl (hard rockers Slash and Aerosmith are arguably the “heaviest” artists to have taken that stage). The thrash metal legends do have some stiff competition for the illustrious halftime headlining slot, with Taylor Swift also being a popular choice given her recent engagement to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Even NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has dropped hints of a possible Taylor Swift halftime show.
