Ghost frontman Tobias Forge, Opeth guitarist Fredrik Åkesson, and the Eric Ericsons Kammarkör (in English, Eric Ericson's Chamber Choir) teamed up to cover Queen's classic "Bohemian Rhapsody" at the Polar Music Prize ceremony last night in Grand Hôtel in Stockholm and yes, it was very good.
The cover was in honor of Queen themselves, who were recipients of the award. Surely Forge and Åkesson weren't sweating bullets as Brian May was sitting right there, watching them do their thing. No preesure. And if you're thinking Åkesson was a random choice, he wasn't. Åkesson has played lead guitar on the last two Ghost records. It also helps that the guy is unreal at guitar.
As for the award itself, the Polar Music Prize describes themselves as such: "The Polar Music Prize was founded in 1989 by the late Stig 'Stikkan' Anderson, one of the true greats in the history of popular music. As the publisher, lyricist and manager of ABBA, he played a key role in their enormous success. Its name stems from Anderson’s legendary record label, Polar Music.
"The Polar Music Prize is one of the most prestigious and unique music prizes in the world, crossing over musical boundaries and awarded to individuals, groups and institutions in recognition of exceptional achievements."
