A Minecraft Movie has become the biggest film of 2025 so far, taking more than $301million in its first weekend.
The film stars Jack Black as Minecraft megafan Steve who leads a plucky group of outsiders – Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison (Jason Momoa), Natalie (Emma Myers), Henry (Sebastian Hansen) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) – on a quest to save The Overworld and return to the real world.
Despite a lukewarm reception from critics, A Minecraft Movie has had the biggest opening of any film since 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. It’s also had the second biggest ever opening for a video game film adaptation, after 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Cinema audiences have also been going crazy over an appearance of “Chicken Jockey” from the hit video game, with footage of their frenzied reactions going viral across social media.
Has a sequel for A Minecraft Movie been confirmed?
A sequel for A Minecraft Movie hasn’t been confirmed but director Jared Hess has said he’s interested in returning to The Overworld. “Oh, it’d be so much fun. Yeah, Hess said in an interview with GamesRadar+. “I mean, look, the world’s infinite [and there are] so many amazing mods and characters and biomes we haven’t explored yet, so it’d be amazing.”
What will the plot be for the Minecraft sequel?
At the end of A Minecraft Movie, our four humans return home to a better life after embracing The Overworld’s spirit of self-expression and creativity – but things were left open-ended enough that any of them could need to return. Steve also leaves The Overworld behind and, in a post-credits scene, finds someone called Alex living in his old house.
In Minecraft, Alex is the female counterpart to Steve, so this tease sets up a sequel perfectly. For her brief appearance at the end of A Minecraft Movie, Alex was played by Kate McKinnon but a number of fans have also taken to social media to back Severance star Britt Lower for the role, should a sequel go ahead.

When will Minecraft 2 be released?
If a sequel wasn’t already being planned, A Minecraft Movie’s surprising performance at the box office will surely have Warner Bros. Entertainment looking to green-light a follow-up.
Talk of a Minecraft movie originally started back in 2014 and a number of different directors were attached to the project before Hess came onboard in 2022. Filming took place between January and April 2024 and the film was released one year later (April 4, 2025).
A Minecraft Movie 2 doesn’t currently have a release date but we can look at A Super Mario Bros. Movie to give us an idea of when it might hit cinemas. The original A Super Mario Bros. Movie was released in 2023 and a sequel was announced one year later on Mario Day (March 10) alongside a release date of April 3, 2026. If the Minecraft sequel follows a similar path, it will hit cinemas in 2028 though Warner Bros. might want to hurry things along.
