Video games are a relatively new art form, but there are still more than anyone could play in a single lifetime. That hasn’t stopped YouTuber Jeff Wires, also known as Chronologically Gaming, who is playing every single computer video game ever made in order of release.
Speaking at the Vintage Computer Festival Southwest, Wires explained: “I am attempting the impossible. He started out as a collector of vintage games before “a tragedy” caused him to lose his entire physical collection.
He now collects games digitally via emulation. He says this has allowed him to explore the history of older consoles like the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the games they had in Europe and Japan.
Wires decided to begin his journey in 1971 and play and rate every game in order of release. He breaks the games down into arcade, computer, console, and handheld. He notes that he won’t be playing games with mechanical elements like pinball or ones that can be played in an arcade for prize tickets or ones on dedicated consoles. So there are some caveats.
Also on the list of skipped games are ones intended for early childhood and educational games for kids, as well as adult-only games that have nudity or “sexual content as the main themes.”
Wires has a live show that goes every weekday and streams it on both Twitch and YouTube. He goes through any physical documentation he can find for the game, such as adverts and game manuals, and then he plays the game on stream while people comment and rate it live.
Wires is currently up to November, 1982, and you can watch his videos on YouTube or Twitch.
