So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
PAULA KELLEY (DROP NINETEENS) – “STATIC”
“I had thought this was going to be a throwaway as I wrote it; just a filler song,” says Drop Nineteens’ Paula Kelley of this new song. “Then I tweaked one chord in the chorus and a whole new path opened up. I remember listening to an early mix and saying aloud, ‘Holy shit, ‘Static’ is actually good now.’ We had a helluva time getting it right, arrangement and production-wise, but I’m shocked at how well it turned out, given how it began.” Paula’s solo album is out March 27.

STEVEN BROWN (TUXEDOMOON) – “WORK”
Tuxedomoon’s Steven Brown will release new album In This Very World on February 20 via Crammed Discs. “Work” is suave and arty. “Ryan Weinstein from the band Coffin Prick sent me a track he was working on for his album and said he ‘Heard me’ on it,” Brown says. “I didn’t know Ryan but I thought this was a novel way of making contact and so I decided to comply with his wish. I assumed he wanted a sax, so I recorded a few solos til I got one I liked. I started to get more involved/interested in the song and decided to try a lyric I had that hadn’t made it into my new album. I recorded it and liked it. Ryan also approved of what I had done. It took me a while to appreciate the piece as it’s so different from everything else on In This Very World. For one thing it has drums. But in the end, I had grown to like the song and wanted to include it on my album!”

GREGORY UHLMANN – “LUCIA” FT. ALABASTER DEPLUME

The first single is “Lucia,” which features his International Anthem labelmate Alabaster DePlume. “This song began with a field recording of the waves in Big Sur,” he says. “Named after the Lucia Lodge, my partner and I stayed there for a couple nights and found the sound of the waves both calming and a little unnerving. There’s an intensity to being on a point with waves crashing down around you. I wrote the piece years ago and always had Gus (Alabaster DePlume) in mind to play, but finally worked up the courage to ask him recently. What he added was perfect and beyond what I could’ve hoped for.”
