The New York-based, Partisan Records-signed artist frames the record as a move away from external expectations. “I think we all try to play into the roles that other people put on us, or that we put on ourselves, in the hopes of being accepted,” she says. “To use this music as a way out of those external narratives is my dream.”

The album’s first single "My Life" is out now and arrives alongside a video directed by Edgar Wright. Cumming describes the song as the album’s foundation, written after a period of “intense pressure, the culmination of writing through the pandemic and the years spent in the rhythm of touring, recording, and trying to find my place within it all.”

Julia was completed over six weeks in Los Angeles and Cumming worked on the record with collaborator Brian Robert Jones, who has previously played with Paramore and Vampire Weekend, and producer Chris Coady, whose credits include Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Beach House. Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner also contributes guitar to two tracks.

A run of solo shows has been announced, including a date at London’s Moth Club in May.
