Last year, Amanda Seyfried went viral for her brief cover of Joni Mitchell's "California" on the dulcimer, which left Jimmy Fallon, his audience, and the entire internet stunned. Now, we finally have answers about it. In a new GQ interview, the actress revealed that she had been preparing for a biopic about the legendary singer-songwriter that ultimately never materialized.
"It was a movie about her and [manager] Elliot Roberts," she said. "Then he died — but not before I met him." There has been another Mitchell biopic in the works, about which Seyfried said, "Apparently a lot of people reached out to Cameron Crowe and were like, 'What the fuck are you doing, dude?' I don't know what he said, but from my knowledge, his version is, she's really young and then she's older." Anya Taylor-Joy and Meryl Streep are reportedly playing younger and present day Mitchell respectively.
The interview also offered a dreamy anecdote about the time Seyfried met Mitchell:
“I sat on the floor petting one of the dogs,” Seyfried says. “She told me a lot of stories.” They shared a steak dinner, and then Mitchell put on Blue, the record widely regarded as Mitchell’s masterpiece and one of the greatest albums ever. “She’s like, ‘We’ll put on the album and light a fire,’” Seyfried says. “After we listened to the album, she’s like, ‘It’s sparse, isn’t it?’” Seyfried feigns fainting. “It’s perfect!”
Speaking of Joni, Stereogum's own VJ Winter recently proposed Joni Jam Brooklyn 2027 to Brandi Carlile at the Songwriters Hall Of Fame induction ceremony. She replied, "I'll bring it up. She's done. She's like, 'No, no, I'm painting now, Brandi, don't bother me about music. Let's eat dinner and try on clothes. But let's not do music yet.' If there's ever a Joni Jam again, it'll be in Canada and it'll be like a small, little thing just for fun."
