Anthrax have revealed that their new album will come out in September. It will be the legendary thrash metal band’s first LP in 10 years.
Previously, bassist Frank Bello had said that the album was due out in May during an interview with Long and McQuade’s Don Conigllo.
When asked recently by Australia’s Everblack podcast whether that release window was still in play, drummer Charlie Benante said (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), “No, it doesn’t come out in May. We’re putting out our first song and video in May. The record is not coming out till September. We pushed it back a little bit. We just had to do a couple of other things to it.”
He added, “It’s coming out in September, but the first song and video will be out in May.”
This is the longest wait between records of the band’s career thus far, surpassing the previous record-holding eight-year wait between 2003’s We’ve Come for You All, their final record with John Bush on vocals, and 2011’s Worship Music, featuring the returning Joey Belladonna.
While that wait was largely due to shifting lineup changes effecting music writing, this wait has been attributed by the band to COVID.”
Guitarist Scott Ian affirmed this, recently telling The Rockpit, “We thought we were just gonna take off for Christmas and New Year’s at ’19 going into ’20 and then get back together in ’20 and make a record. And then, of course, the world had other plans for everybody. So it wasn’t until some point later in ’21 that that started picking up again.”
The new album, which has not yet had its title revealed, is once again helmed by producer Jay Ruston, who also helmed the band’s two previous albums, Worship Music and 2016’s For All Kings.
The band played a small portion of a new song during their recent Canadian tour with Megadeth and Exodus, and may offer a bit more from the album on their upcoming tour of Australia.
Benante noted, “I could see us kind of expanding it a bit for our friends in Australia, maybe playing a little more, because, for me, it’s become so hard to just contain this, because I’m so excited about it. I’m so happy about it. This record is really, really good.”
The band has stated firm intentions to tour comprehensively for the record, but they already have dozens of dates mapped out for 2026, including North American shows in September supporting Iron Maiden (pick up tickets here).
