More than two decades after her viral lip-sync scandal on Saturday Night Live, Ashlee Simpson says she’s ready to return to the show and sing again.
During the finale of The Masked Singer‘s 14th season, when clues were revealed to figure out the identity of a contestant known as Galaxy Girl (who later won the competition), Simpson spoke about a moment from her past that “changed everything for her.” “I was publicly humiliated, called a fraud, a fake,” she explained. “It was devastating. I was so young, and I thought it would define me forever.”
Simpson, revealed to be Galaxy Girl, expanded on those comments during an exit interview with Entertainment Weekly later, confirming that she was referring to her 2004 appearance on SNL. “Now it’s something I can laugh about,” Simpson admitted. “It’s something I’ve been through, so it’s not something I look at like I’m going through anymore. It’s a part of my young adulthood and what kind of shaped me as the person I am now.”
“I think that [in] life, sometimes you need a little fight in you. So that definitely gave me that,” she c0ntinued, before revealing that she’s ready to return — but she’s not trying to prove herself now. “Oh yeah, I would definitely go back. That chapter is behind me, and I never looked at myself as that moment defined me. Right after that, I went on tour and everything.”
At the time on SNL, after performing the song “Pieces of You,” Simpson was set to perform the track “Autobiography” when vocals from the former song began playing — leading to people accusing her of lip-synching both songs. When the vocal mishap happened, Simpson awkwardly danced on stage before walking off.
Simpson eventually returned to SNL the following season and performed the tracks “Catch Me When I Fall” and “Boyfriend” in 2005, but the performances, meant to prove her singing capabilities, couldn’t overshadow the infamous situation from a year before that became a major pop culture moment of the early-2000s.
