ashnymph – “47”

1 day ago 4

A few days ago London-via-East Yorkshire producer ashnymph, whose real name is Will Wiffen, released his debut EP Childhood and announced the track "47" as a single. It's very good and trippy and weird, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it, therefore I must blog it.

Childhood has a playful makeshift feel to it. The press release noted comparisons to Moin, Battles, Soulwax, or MGMT, and I definitely agree with all that. Wiffen recorded the EP in his bedroom studio in south east London. "47" features sonar-esque beeps, twittering guitars, gamelan samples, and what sounds like pitched-up vocals that sing "ding, ding, ding, dong, ding." I'm sure that's not actually what's being said, but, regardless, it is soothing and otherworldly. It makes me want to curl up into a ball and roll around the room like a small child.

Wiffen shared some insight on "47," revealing:

It's about kids drinking and getting far out. A combination, I guess, of pondering the state of alcoholism and the lack of spirituality in the western world. It was definitely in a phase of getting into it with the experimentation, reflected in the random samples of gamelan music that made it onto the final mix.

Listen to it below.

Childhood is out now via Blitzcat Records.
