Written into Changes will be the second album that Avalon Emerson has released under the moniker Avalon Emerson & the Charm, following her 2023 debut & the Charm. Today, she shares new single "Jupiter and Mars", produced by Vampire Weekend founding member Rostam Batmanglij.
Speaking on the process of recording the song, Emerson shares: “I loved chasing this song with Rostam almost as much as our two little dogs loved chasing each other around the studio.”
The album, recorded in Braintree between spring and winter of 2024, is said to be made by a "collaborative entity" of musicians including Batmanglij and Nathan Jenkins (Bullion) as co-producers, Keivon Mehdi Hobeheidar on bass, Jay Flew as part of the early writing sessions, and Emerson's wife , Hunter Lombard on guitar. It chronicles a five-year period of constant travel for Emerson, including moves from Berlin to Los Angeles to New York, and sees her learning how to embrace change.
Discussing the collaborative experience in the studio, Emerson adds: “For the first album, the songs were pretty soft and kind of bedroomy,” Emerson observes. "And then playing them on a big kind of festival stage was a learning experience. Coming back into the studio for a second round, it was important to think about the dynamics and energy of what we were making and how they might be performed in the future.”
