Avril Lavigne has come full circle by releasing a cover of Alanis Morissette’s ’90s classic “Ironic.” Stream it below.
On the cover, Lavigne doesn’t attempt to reinvent the wheel, keeping the arrangement and the not-so-ironic lyrics true to the original. She doesn’t try to match Morissette’s powerhouse voice, either, instead channeling the early-aughts angst from her early career.
Morissette and a young Lavigne performed a duet of “Ironic” at the House of Blues in Los Angeles on February 11th, 2005. The moment took place during the first encore of Morissette’s concert, when Lavigne was brought on stage to first perform her own hit, “Losing Grip.”

Lavigne’s new version of “Ironic” was recorded for the soundtrack for the upcoming romcom Mile End Kicks, arriving in theaters on April 17th. In the film, Barbie Ferreira stars as Grace Pine, a 24-year-old music critic who moves to Montreal in 2011 to write a book about the making of Morissette’s breakout 1995 album, Jagged Little Pill.
