Is this the return of the erotic thriller? A reboot of the notorious 1992 box office smash Basic Instinct is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists. The news was first reported by TheWrap.

The studio and producer Scott Stuber have acquired the rights to the currently untitled reboot of the film, which originally starred Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas. Staying true to the spirit of the original movie, Basic Instinct screenwriter Joe Eszterhas has signed on to pen the new version for a cool $4 million. Eszterhas is best known for writing such box office hits as Flashdance (1983) and Jagged Edge (1985), as well as Basic Instinct. He’s also penned the best-selling memoir Hollywood Animal, released in 2004.

Directed by Paul Verhoeven, Basic Instinct was a massive success and cultural touchstone, pulling in more than $350 million globally. The movie’s provocative themes and legendary interrogation scene featuring Stone helped solidify the film as the definition of the big-screen erotic thriller. In the movie, Douglas played detective Nick Curran, who was investigating a brutal murder, with Stone as crime novelist Catherine Trammel – and the prime suspect in the murder investigation.
