‘BIG MAMA’ Marks Flying Lotus’ First-Ever Release on Brainfeeder

2 weeks ago 13

Nearly 20 years after launching Brainfeeder, Flying Lotus finally releases a project through his own Los Angeles imprint.

Flying Lotus has always approached his craft with a fearless sense of experimentation. He’s scored and directed horror films like Kuso and Ash in addition to producing genre-blurring IDM and hip-hop collaborations with artists such as Smoke DZA, Kendrick Lamar, and Erykah Badu. FlyLo’s expansive catalog reflects both his versatility and his finely tuned ear.

BIG MAMA vividly mirrors his willingness to experiment. The eight-track project is also FlyLo’s first-ever release via Brainfeeder, his independent Los Angeles imprint that uplifts acts such as Mathewdavid, Teebs, salami rose joe louis, Thundercat, TOKiMONSTA, and more. Listeners can hear the first seven tracks one after the other, or skip to the eighth track, which is a continuous mix of the EP.

Over the years, the Grammy-winning artist has contributed to a range of influential projects, including To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar, It Is What It Is by Thundercat, and the track “S.D.S.” from Mac Miller’s album, Watching Movies with the Sound Off. Now, he’s turning that same creative energy toward his own label, bringing his work directly into the ecosystem he’s spent nearly two decades building.

“I think it was just time at this point to work with the label that I built and work more closely with the team that’s around me more,” said FlyLo. “You know, we’ve been able to compete with some pretty big records in the world, we’ve been at the Grammys several times, and I think we’ve built a nice situation for ourselves, so why not?”

If fans listen closely, the EP feels like one continuous track. FlyLo even collaborated with artists Daniel Larsson and Tomas Redigh, better known as Rymdreglage, to produce a stop-motion animation for Big Mama, creating a 13-minute visual experience that ties all seven tracks together.

The album unfolds like a video game world waiting to be explored. Across the EP, FlyLo leans heavily into glitchy IDM textures, warped synths, and unpredictable rhythmic shifts that keep listeners on their toes.

The result is an experience that feels almost interactive. Take tracks “CAPTIN KERNEL,” “ANTELOPE ONIGIRI,” and “PINK DREAM,” for example. All three make you feel like you’re in the middle of an arcade, waiting your turn to play Pac-Man.

Elsewhere, songs morph and evolve like levels in a digital universe. Cuts like “BIG MAMA,” “IN THE FOREST – DAY,” “HORSE NUKE,” and “BROBOBASHER” introduce new sonic environments filled with strange melodies, pixelated percussion, and distorted basslines. It’s the kind of project that rewards close listening, revealing new details with every pass.

Ultimately, the album plays like a short but vivid adventure. It captures the curiosity and imagination that have defined FlyLo’s career. For fans of experimental electronic music and sound design, BIG MAMA feels like unlocking a new level in Flying Lotus’ ever-expanding universe, one he’s spent nearly 20 years building and is now nurturing from within.
