Following “Crown” and “Feeling”, “Leap Year” was written on Leap Day in 2024 while Billie Marten wrestled with winter malaise in bed. Billie’s first non-autobiographical song considers a couple who can only rendezvous every four years. They long for the future but cling to the moments they have.
Recalling the track’s genesis, Billie says: “I picked up this app which is a digital version of an Optigan that you can get on your phone. It has pre-stored sample sounds that you can play chord by chord. I stitched some buttons together and it became this song. It was written in a Leap Year, 29th February 2024, which is where I got the title and premise from. It’s about two people who can only be reunited every leap year; they have one day every four years. It’s a song about fleeting love and the pain that can bring.”

And that direction is clear — the controls are set for the heart of Billie’s incredible songs," says producer Weinrobe of the album.
"Yes, the record was recorded live. Yes, Billie sang the lead vocals as it was going down. Yes, we were huddled up in a circle — no headphones, no walls, no playback, nothing separating each person from the next, and nothing separating the performers from their performances."
