Bon Iver Announces VOLUMES Archive Series, Shares “HEAVENLY FATHER”: Stream

Late last year, Bon Iver‘s Justin Vernon said that he’d be “very surprised” if he ever made another album. Well, Vernon may not be a new album, but Vernon does have a new release on the way.

Technically speaking, VOLUMES isn’t a new album; instead, it’s the start of an archival series that includes “live shows, demos, unreleased recordings, and other previously unheard material” meant to explore the “many eras and multitudes that make up ‘Bon Iver.'” Due out April 3rd via Jagjaguwar, VOLUMES: ONE “SELECTIONS FROM MUSIC CONCERTS 2019-2023 BON IVER 6 PIECE BAND” assembles 11 performances that find the collective at their “wildest, warmest and most muscular whole.”

Or, as Vernon put it in a statement, “This particular set of 10 songs is like, ‘Here, if you’ve never heard Bon Iver, or you have and you didn’t like it, this might be for you. This is what we became. This is really us at our best. This is it.”

The band not only includes Vernon but Andrew Fitzpatrick, Flock of Dimes’ Jenn Wasner, Matthew McCaughan, Michael Lewis, and Sean Carey. Together, they collective have forged what a press release called “a time capsule,” and what was further described as a “prismatic look at an old friend, seeing them for who they were and who they are, all the goodness of which they’re capable but maybe too shy to show at times.” This collective seemingly had quite the effect on Vernon, and during their final shows behind 2019’s i,i back in 2023, he shared the following note:

“The fact that I’ve been with friends, not just work buddies. And the fact that we’ve traveled all over the world together, while we all did our jobs at the highest levels possible. We crushed this shit as hard as anybody has ever crushed anything. I’m so deeply proud to be a part of Us.”

VOLUMES: ONE not only focuses on music from of 2016’s 22, A Million and the aforementioned i,i but three other important pieces: the “COVID-era hymnal” titled “P.D.L.I.F.”; a cover of Mahalia Jackson’s “A SATISFIED MIND”; and “HEAVENLY FATHER,” which Vernon has unveiled as part of today’s announcement. After some time unavailable, “HEAVENLY FATHER” restores “a beloved fan favorite to digital streaming platforms”; listen to it below.

Vernon also recently discussed VOLUMES during his ongoing NTS Radio show. He said the project was very much modeled after both the Neil Young Archives and Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series. Listen to that full episode here. (Vernon also played tunes from Bonnie Raitt, The War on Drugs, and Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra).

Pre-orders for VOLUMES: ONE are available now. Check out the album artwork followed by the full tracklist below.

Bon Iver’s most recent original record was last year’s excellent Sable, Fable. (We ranked it No. 6 on our list of 2025’s very best albums.) If you haven’t already, listen to Vernon discuss the record in-depth with our own Kyle Meredith.
