Bowen Yang received a pitch-perfect send-off from Saturday Night Live, starring in the final sketch of the show’s Christmas episode opposite host and close friend Ariana Grande and musical guest Cher. Playing a Delta Airlines worker making eggnog on his final day on the job, Yang quickly broke the fourth wall as he said his goodbyes.
“Oh, sorry, my machine’s kind of breaking down, so I’m closing my station. This is my last shift,” Yang’s character remarked. “Yeah, it’s sad. I’m gonna miss everything about this place. The smells, celebrities would come through.”
He spoke to Grande’s character on the phone, who said, “I wish you were home, but I’m so proud of you. All the eggnog you’ve made over the years. Some of it was great, some of it was rotten.” Yang quipped, “A lot of it got cut.”
“You know, I also think Eggnog’s kind of like me,” Yang continued, “It’s not for everyone, but the people who like it are my kind of people.”
Yang and Grande then launched into a duet of “Please Come Home for Christmas.” Part way through the song, Yang offered further heartfelt remarks: “I should have come home earlier. I just feel so lucky that I ever got to work here. And I just wanted to enjoy it for a little bit longer. Especially the people. I’ve loved every single person who works here because they’ve done so much for me, especially my boss.”
Enter: Yang’s “boss,” Cher (and not Lorne Michaels), who wished Yang farewell. The sketch concluded with Yang, fighting back tears, embracing both Grande and Cher.
