Brendan Berg, bassist of Winnipeg-based indie-pop band Royal Canoe, was killed along with his partner after being involved in a head-on vehicle collision on Tuesday.

The incident occurred around 3:330 p.m. local time on Highway 10 in Bowsman, Manitoba, according to CBC News. Investigators believe a vehicle was driving in the south lane when it veered over the centre line and crashed into Berg’s parked vehicle sitting on the eastern edge of the highway, causing it to roll into the ditch. Berg was 42 years old at the time of his death, while his partner, Olivia Michalczuk, was 31.

“We are all in a state of shock trying to process this tragic news,” Royale Canoe said in a statement posted to social media. “Brendan was the kindest, sweetest man you could ever know, and his passing has left an enormous hole in the lives of everyone who knew him.”
